Band News Update

We have been extremely fortunate to have been the recipients of a few grants at the end of 2019 and start of 2020.

Forever Manchester – has supported us with our free Community Xmas Concert which enabled us to give all children a free present from Santa and helped with ensuring that the room was festively decorated. We were also able fit-out Santa and his elves.

The Co-operative – Marple Co-op have chosen to support us as one of their local charities and so members of the Co-op can go online to nominate us to receive the 1% charity donation that is made by the Co-op whenever you use your membership card. We are part of the Co-op community funding from October 27th 2019 to October 24th 2020. You can support us at www.coop.co.uk/membership.

Foyles Foundation – Have given us a massive boost with a £5,800 grant towards new instruments, music scores and uniform jackets.

National Lottery 25th Birthday Grant – We applied for  money to cover costs of putting on our free concerts in Spring and Autumn at the Methodist Church and were successful in a random draw that they made. This will cover all our out of pocket expenses.

We would like to extend a massive thankyou to these organisations without whom we would be struggle to pay for the resources required to run the band and to maintain our new position in the 1st Section.

BAND SUPPORTERS (Previously known as VP’s)

We are as always, indebted to our band supporters who help us financially to maintain the upkeep of the band. If you would like to become a band supporter please contact our secretary  themarpleband@gmail.com

More Achievements at Morley

Following our very long day at Whit Friday on the 14th June, we decided to do it all again in Morley on Sunday 16th June.

Morley hosts a March and Hymn contest, so we arrived at Morley at lunchtime, ready to give the march Knight Templar one more outing. The weather was changeable to say the least, one moment beautiful sunshine, the next monsoon rain. But we braved the elements and marched down Queen Street to the Town Hall, playing Arnhem.

The Contest Hymn came first, The Day Though Gavest, followed by Contest March Knight Templar for the final time this year. Would we achieve the same result as last year? The results came in – we were the highest placed Second Section band, and were 5th overall, and for the March alone we were 4th, beating some very good higher section bands.

Whit Friday 2019 Report

I was incredibly lucky to join Marple Band, as a supporter, for Whit Friday 2019. Honestly, I wasn’t sure I was looking forward to being outside for most of the evening as it had done nothing but rain all week, however the weather was kind and largely held off (aside from Carrbrook where I regretted not having an umbrella!)

The bus was a typical band bus lots of banter, mainly picking on the poor cornets, and a few smelly egg sandwiches but it was lovely to witness the happy and noisy atmosphere and to see just how good friends they have all become as a band.

It was also very clear to see just how much everyone enjoys Whit Friday, despite it being tough on the lip and on the two expert runners Marple had that night, Ruth and Jackie. David, the usual runner, was deeply missed (he had a very poor excuse of being at work!! BOO)
