A Sad Farewell to Dennis

We are all saddened to hear of the passing away of our dear friend and bandsman Dennis.

Dennis first became associated with the Marple Band in the late 60s as a tutor and conductor to the junior band, laying the foundation for the success and stability our band enjoys today. He was also instrumental in the good fortune the band appreciated under the baton of the late Maurice McClean, as bandmaster and accomplished cornet player.

Recently Dennis played a pivotal role in contributing to the band’s achievement in securing 1st place in the 3rd section N.W.A. Championship at Blackpool. Dennis was a trustee for the band and an active member on The Brass Bands of Marple committee.

A Diamond Geezer.

Mellor Wedding for Kate and Daniel

What a fantastic way to celebrate the start of Kate and Daniel Leatherbarrow’s life together.

The Marple Band played at the bespoke wedding of Kate and Daniel Leatherbarrow at Mellor Church on Saturday 25th May. Playing the Death or Glory March as they left the church and walked to the reception venue at Mellor Parish Centre. The band played a wide selection of music for the guests as they drank champagne, ate canapés and soaked up the views over the Marple area.

The groom later conducted the band to “The Great Escape” and then a wide range of music chosen by the couple was conducted by Steve Sutton. The music included Skyfall, She, Mr Brightside, Concerto D’Aranjuez and many more.

Piste Hägen in Romiley

The Marple Bierkeller Band, Piste Hägen Brass, could have been playing in any German town on Friday May 10th.

They could also have been received with the same enthusiasm as those who attended the Romiley and Marple Lions Bierkeller fund raising event at St Christopher’s Centre in Romiley. The concert was for the charity Varivocals and an impressive £600 was raised for the charity through ticket sales and a raffle. The Lions put together an entertaining and action packed evening with a super hot pot supper.

The audience was treated to excellent music by the 40-strong Varivocals choir in the first half. They then took a very active/vocal part in the second half when traditional German bierkeller music with drinking games were played and as the event progressed they joined in the singing of popular songs.

NW Regional Final 2019

This year the North West Brass Band Association Regional Finals were held on Sunday 24th February at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

The sun was shining with 17°C plus temperatures with clear blue skies compared to other years where it was put on your woolly hat and thermals if braving the bracing windchill of just above 0°C temperatures and the horizontal rain on the promenade. All boded well.

Having played at an invitation only Preview Evening the previous Saturday at Ruskin Community High school near Crewe and getting some very positive feedback our hopes were high.
