Massed Bands in Joint Commemoration

On Saturday 10th November the annual joint concert of Marple and Hawk Green took place at St Paul’s Church in Compstall to help raise funds for the Brass Bands of Marple and for St Paul’s Church.

This has been the venue for this event for several years and this year was extra special as the bands played music to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. The church had also been undertaking major renovations and had been transformed into an even better venue for this concert.

The church was imaginatively decorated with poppies that had been made by the local community, with contributions from schools, clubs, the church congregation and senior citizens. The poppies were attached to netting which draped from windows and the pulpit to give a striking background to a superb concert by both bands.

On Ilkley Moor Baht ‘at

The Marple Band were approached along with other brass bands in the North West of England to see whether they would be available to help with a Sky Arts series of programmes about Brass Bands in Britain. This is scheduled to be shown in Spring 2019.

Production Company, ‘Twofour, has been commissioned to make a new TV series about Brass bands in Britain. “Brass Bands” (working title) is a brand new docuseries that celebrates the world of brass bands. The four part series which will be shown on Sky Arts, will follow some of Britain’s championship bands as they compete in the season’s most prestigious contests – from the Whit Friday contest, to the British Open.

The aim of the series is to shine a light on the incredible skill, diversity and commitment of the musicians. As well as the growing need for bands to stay innovative on the international stage, whilst at the same time, honouring tradition’. Three of our members – Howard Groves (2nd Cornet), Matt Holt (B♭ Bass) and Julia Robinson (Repiano Cornet) were available to help out and headed to Ilkley on Saturday 20th October for a day of filming.

Debut for New Uniforms at Musicals Concert

The Band is delighted to now have a full set of new uniforms after a hugely successful fundraising exercise lasting over two years.

We achieved our target of £7,350, for 34 new jackets and 3 percussion waist coats, after a final push in December and following a very generous contribution of £3,430 from the Co-op through their community fund raising programme.

This is a fantastic opportunity for organisations to get funding that may not be available through the traditional grant routes. We were one of 3 nominated charities supported by the Co-op for 3 months. Over that time, for every member who used their Co-op cards, the Co-op donated 1% of purchase value to a fund. This was then allocated to the 3 chosen charities. Money raised from carrier bag sales was also shared between the charities.
